did you know.....?

When a file is emptied from your recycle bin it is not deleted?

There is some free encryption programs out there? (truecrypt)

Lockheed Martin, one of the big government defense contractors, left information about their missile defense systems, bank accounts, and employees on hard drives they sold on ebay or other auctions.

There are a few free data recovery/secure erasing programs that are easy to use. (Recuva, CCleaner, WinClear)

There are free programs to crack windows user passwords (ophcrack)

It could take several days to years to crack a 256-bit encryption depending on the length of the password.

"40% of hard drives sold on ebay have sensitive data on them"

Sometimes data that has been overwritten can be recovered.

new questions

What is computer forensics?
What are some tools used in it?
Can encryption be broken without knowing anything about the password?
What program would be used for this?
What are some tools used to recover data off of hard drives?
What happens to a file when you empty your recycle bin?
What are some programs that can be used to recover files?
How long does it take to recover files?
What can these programs do?
What ways can you stop data from being recovered from a computer?

Lost....

Trying to find someone to interview is hard. I was hoping i could contact someone from the ESL but they do not have email addresses for the admins. So I ended up finding a new way to take notes. WikiPad seems like a good thing to take notes with.

So far the only problem i am having with this subject is most of the sites that may contain information are blocked. I don't know what else to put here, i've been working on for my plan for this project and what items i will need.

open source/linux/computer stuff

Some ideas i have for a project is convincing my school to switch to using Linux or at least using open source software instead of things like Microsoft office and Adobe stuff. so today I was looking at different virtual machines for Linux. I was trying to look at Parallels Workstation but their site is blocked, i was looking at it because I heard of Parallels for Mac from people who use Mac OSX.
